Michelle's Record: Environment and Climate Change

Michelle Rempel Garner recognizes that climate change is a real public policy challenge and requires a strong response. Canadians and Alberta's care about the environment and expect their government to develop policies to address the growing concern of climate change and protect our environment. Michelle believes we need to discuss ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the context of a balanced budget, using policies that will actually target emissions and not taxpayers.

Michelle wrote a comprehensive article in the National Post questioning the efficacy of a carbon tax and suggesting better policy alternatives here https://nationalpost.com/opinion/michelle-rempel-serious-questions-about-ghg-policy

Michelle and her Conservative colleagues have put forward a comprehensive plan to protect Canada’s environment, fight climate change and protect taxpayers through implementing a series of policies. Some of these policies include:

  • Introducing a tax credit to rapidly accelerate the deployment of carbon capture, utilization and storage technology in the energy sector and in important industries that have few alternatives to burning fossil fuels, like fertilizer and chemical production;
  • Investing in forest health and wildfire prevention and early detection;
  • Working with provinces, territories and the agriculture and forestry sectors to identify and support ways in which the sectors can contribute to enhancing carbon sequestration;
  • Establishing transparent and reliable standards for carbon credits associated with land management practices with the eventual goal of establishing a national carbon offset market. This market would link together existing compliance programs associated with federal and provincial regulations;
  • Studying the imposition of a carbon border tariff

Justin Trudeau has failed to address the growing concern of climate change. He has implemented policies that hurt hard working Albertans, target Alberta’s vital industries and do nothing to reduce GHG emissions.

Michelle will keep holding the government accountable for failing to put forward a real plan to protect Canada’s environment. She will continue to listen to the needs and voices of our community on this issue.
